Meet Michi's Farm

Michael Gindl is one of our most exciting growers, whose holistic approach to agriculture (working with livestock and a diverse crop of different fruits and grains) is an inspiration for many farmers and vignerons alike. Weinviertel is the largest recognised wine producing region in Austria, and there are many families and small growers here that work historic lands to make a living and sustain a lifestyle.

Gindl’s new range ‘Michi’s Farm’ is his attempt to help his friends and colleagues in a more long- term sustainable way. All of the fruit that he buys for the range is organically certified, and his aim here is to create a delicious and affordable wine that celebrates the small growers in his region, by paying them a fair market price for their outstanding fruit. Grüner Veltliner tends to be the enduring theme in this region when it comes to white varieties, while his orange and the red cuvée come from various native grapes such as Welschriesling, Zweigelt and Portuguese.

Most recently, Michael has also been able to integrate a small piece of land from his wife Teresa and her family in Staatz, about 30 minutes North of Hohenruppersdorf to the mix. ‘These vineyards have been farmed organically longer than mine, and it is such a joy to shed light on these lesser appreciated villages of our region, where the wines also take a more floral and aromatic quality compared to my own vineyards.’
