Michael Wenzel

Aus dem Quartz 2019

A wine that redefines the idea of an Austrian classic. Spicy, flinty and textured - we like to think Furmint is the Chenin Blanc of the East. Give it time to breath and the wine will unfold incredible layers of depth. A wine that certainly pushes above its weight.

From a handful of vineyards in Michael`s home town Rust, Burgenland this Furmint comes from 10 to 30 years old vines. The grapes are harvested throughout September and usually whole-bunch pressed a few hours after the grapes arrive in the winery. The fermenting juice finishes fermentation in tank and barrel and is then aged for 8 months on the leese before being racked and bottled without filtration.

Behind the Bottle

Michael Wenzel

Furmint and Austria would not be the same without the story of the Wenzel family. Based in Rust, a (former) stronghold of world- famous sweet wines, Michael Wenzel’s grandfather and father believed in this grape so much that they secretly smuggled back historic clones from Hungary in times of the Iron Curtain and Cold War, risking getting caught (with severe consequences). But when they arrived back to the Hungarian-Austrian border, Wenzel senior would pull out his clarinet, playing old Hungarian folk music which was forbidden back in the communist time ...
