Little Buteo 2014

Michael’s Little Buteo and Buteo are named after the buzzards that roam the vineyards helping to reduce pests. Both wines are made from Grüner Veltliner, and the ‘Little Buteo’ is the more approachable, early drinking version of the two. The grapes come from densely planted vineyards growing on a combination of loess, sandstone and loam soils.

The Little Buteo is both ripe and fresh, with juicy apple notes and a textural complexity coming from the skins and the lees. Slightly oxidative in style, this is definitely a distinctive expression of the Grüner Veltliner variety.

The grapes are hand harvested and transported to the cellar in small crates to preserve freshness. 50% of the grapes are presse whole cluster, and the other 50% macerated on the skins for 4-8 hours. The grapes are then gently pressed over 8 hours and spontaneously fermented in stainless steel tanks with a maximum temperature of 22°C. The wine is then aged on the lees without SO2 in steel tanks for 6 months before bottling.

Riesling "Steiner Hund" 2014

The tiny Steiner Hund (dog) vineyard is one of Austria’s top Riesling sites. Legend has it that this vineyard, once owned by a wealthy winemaker, was exchanged for a local farmer’s dog when the region was plagued by famine. Today, some of the top producers in Kremstal and Wachau own vines here. This south-facing site is comprised of conglomerate rock with a thin topsoil of loess and loam. The Steiner Hund produces Rieslings of enormous complexity, depth and elegance. A kaleidoscope of flavours emerge from an intensely mineral, structured core. Deeply concentrated yet pulsating with life, it is clear to see why the Steiner Hund is considered the holy grail of Riesling plots.

The grapes were hand harvested, meticulously sorted, with 10% of the fruit manually destemmed. The grapes are then macerated on the skins for up to 48 hours before beginning their spontaneous fermentation in steel tanks. The wine is aged on the lees right up to the point of bottling to promote textural complexity and prevent oxidation.

The vines here are around 60 years old, giving the wine both intensity and balance.

The slate soils are perfect for the gradual ripening of Riesling, and yield a Mosel like style of Riesling - taught and linear. The wine is brimming with aromatic stone fruits and delicate herbal and floral notes. Complex and elegant.

In 2014, Jutta acquired a tiny vineyard next to her core Grüner Veltliner site, which features a 25-year old Riesling plot on the one side and a Sauvignon Blanc plot on the other side, which were both blended together with her Grüner Veltliner. Rosengartel is somewhat the holy grail of Viennese vineyards. Situated on the Nussberg appellation, Rosengartel is the filet piece, as Jutta likes to call it.

In 2014 Jutta invested almost an absurd number of painstaking hours of manual labor into this diva for - believe it or not - only 700 litres. 700 litres doubtlessly liquid gold, which were accompanied by 25 harvesters into the wine cellar, after they had picked berry by berry in two rounds.

Well, I guess there are only a few Riesling sites in Austria that can take on this small beauty. Stone fruit, some citrus, subtle rose-scents, wet salt, crystal clear and god damn precise. Welcome to Riesling Wonderland.

Now we're talking! Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you to the quintessence of Vienna, the Gemischter Satz. A field blend of numerous varieties, in Jutta's case 12(!!!) varieties grown in the same vineyard and harvested and pressed together.

The tradition of growing field blends in Vienna goes back for more than hundred years. Almost as old as this tradition are Jutta's fantastic old-vines that contribute to this subtle and energetic wine.

Since the grapes are all picked at the same time maturing processes are rarely or do not at all harmonize among each other. However, that is what authentic and old Gemischter Satz sites are all about. The decision-makers are the vineyards themselves - Jutta simply listens and takes any necessary further steps. The result? Well, lets put it what way - we never had such an 'easy-going' and cool punch with such a delicate and fantastic expression of soil. Vienna - pure, original and fun!

A 'gangsta' from organic grapes which has no origin ... as Claus likes to tell. Because it's too rich and independent, too restless and wild it did not receive the annual 'quality' approval. Too bad those old-school judges didn't get the bigger picture with this stunning wine.

But really, who cares? This is a meaty and juicy varietal with notes of black tea, green herbs, pepper and scents of the forest.

A special name for a special wine. The name derives from the four forces that shape this extraordinary natural wine! Earth - Air - Weed and Vines. Put these four words together (in German) and you get Erde - Luft - Gras - Reben.

Don’t get us wrong the name of this wine is not the only unusual thing about this unfiltered, low-intervention beauty.

The grapes for this wine have its origin on the ‚Leithaberg‘ appellation - one of the last alpine remains - enabling the vines to soak up the pure limestone and schist soil characteristics that make these wines so special. After picking, the berries are fermented in large Georgian amphoras for up to 8 weeks. A year later they are filled without filtration and if needed, minimal parts of sulphur.

This is a wine that shows a rich and deep character with smells of mandarines, peach - and, as Claus himself would put it: Simply awesome stuff where nothing and nobody is needed - except a lot of time!

Warm and sun-flooded days and chilled winds coming from the woods surrounding the area.

Still, this wines shows the enourmous potential for Riesling in Wagram. Dense, strucured with an extreme length. You already guessed it: Not your everyday wine label. 'Vom Loess', as the wine is called, is the Austrian expression for the type of soil that lays the groundwork for this refreshing white blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Muskateller grapes.

You will love its tempting elderflower aroma combined with the elegance that makes the wine a memorable experience inside and out.

Christian Tschida is a man of extremes and tries to push the limits in order to create wines that challenge taste buds.

With this blend of Scheurebe and Pinot Blanc Christian does not make any difference. The name 'Himmel Auf Erden' (in German 'Heaven On Earth') originates from a sketch made by famous Austrian artist Alfred Hrdlicka.

On the nose the wine shows a light peach perfume with hints of blossom followed by a silky as well as slight nutty taste - never overloaded or opulent. At the same time you find a focused minerality which gives this heavenly drink a seemingly endless finish.

This time it's not the usual suspects that make up this blend. Cabernet Sauvignon and Zweigelt grapes create the base for this definition of unpretentious drinkability.

In times when reds get too much and you just want some real red juice Himmel Auf Erden will probably do the job - don't get us wrong this is still pretty special stuff.

Think of it as a noble everyday wine, with a beautiful scent of fresh herbs and dark fruits. This wine spent two years in large oak and was then filled with no fining nor filtration.

Christian recommends drinking the wine at around 15* C so pop it in the fridge before you enjoy it!

Christian Tschida and Rosé? Well, it wasn't love at first sight. Christian never liked the soft, simple style that most of Rosés in this world are all about.

It wasn't until his father, who loved drinking Rosés in summer, claimed that he would do a better Rosé than him when Christian decided it was time to create his very own interpretation of Rosé. What came after was astonishing. Cabernet Franc grapes with a way longer time on skins, resulting a truly magical colour and taste. We are happy that we secured a small amount of it for you, it won't last long that's for sure.

A classic. Complex aromas of blackcurrant and gooseberry vie for favour on the palate, while the harmonious mineral spice and refined maturity of the extracts ensure a powerful, long finish.
This sauvignon is a sophisticated wine full of temperament, a wine you should take the time to savour.

November Rain - one of Ewald's flagships and once again inspired by the famous Guns N' Roses Song - (and yes it is Ewald's favourite band)

Expressive bouquet, fine minerality, intense, complex, yet particularly subtle and elegant. On the palate it combines robustness, richness, raciness and creamy fusion: a Chardonnay with Burgundian elegance.

Don't Cry - not only famously played by cult rock band - Guns N' Roses - but also transformed into Ewald's flagship Sauvignon Blanc.

Its subtle, fascinatingly deep play of aromas with ripe pineapple, yellow paprika and blood orange cries for a large burgundy glass or decanter to aerate. You are then rewarded with a developing fragrance of wild herbs and smoky tobacco leaves underpinned by a hint of white chocolate.

This is a highly complex and filigree Sauvignon Blanc from a very special vintage.

Don't spoil it with food!

A very aromatic Austrian classic - fruit-driven with notes of citrus and especially green apple. Also some floral and subtle roasted tones. A touch of sweetness; very lively and vibrant!

Ripe, rich aromas with generous vanilla and pronounced yellow fruit notes; also candied grapes, vanilla sugar, sugar frosting, sweet and smooth, seductive, sweet fruitiness, opulent. It has a bountiful expression from the beginning, a full-body and a very good length.
